A survey by consumer motoring site CarBuyer asked readers to rank the most attractive car brands on the market, with over 1,000 votes being cast.
With the Scandinavians topping the likes of Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Land Rover, many of the company’s other main rivals came outside the top ten – showing a real gap in style and design.
The voters praised Volvo’s "cool, elegant lines” on many of its recent models, including the XC60, which has won World Car of the Year, and the European Car of the Year-winning XC40.
As well as being able to ‘upvote’ a brand’s design philosophy, the public could also ‘downvote’ manufacturers, which promoted those with better-looking cars even further.
Jon Wakefield, Volvo Car UK managing director, said: "People's first impressions about the quality of a car will always be based on how they look, so it is great to see how our new designs are creating such a positive buzz.
"Our design ethos produces striking, beautiful exteriors and elegant, unfussy interiors that are attractive yet eminently practical and easy to live with."
Recent Volvos have come with strong exterior lines, modern interiors and simplified layouts.
