Toyota to build megwatt-scale hydrogen station for semi trucks

Khodrocar - Toyota has announced it will build the world's first megawatt-scale 100 percent renewable energy hydrogen station. It will be located at the Port of Long Beach, California, one of the countries busiest shipping and transport hubs.

According to Toyota, the "Tri-Gen" facility will generate all its hydrogen, water, and electricity from bio and agricultural waste. It will be capable of supplying approximately 2.35 megawatts of electricity and 1.2 tons of hydrogen per day, enough to power about 2,350 average-sized homes and nearly 1,500 vehicles.

The announcement of the station coincides with Toyota's Project Portal, announced earlier this year. That is the heavy duty fuel cell system developed for class 8 trucks, the 18-wheelers that comprise much of the nation's transport. The station will supply fuel for these trucks, as well as the Toyota Mirai fuel-cell sedans that support the facility. It will also power the entirety of Toyota Logistics Services, based at the Port of Long Beach, and serve as Toyota's first 100 percent renewable energy facility in North America.

"Tri-Gen is a major step forward for sustainable mobility and a key accomplishment of our 2050 Environmental Challenge to achieve net zero CO2 emissions from our operations," said vice president of strategic planning Doug Murtha. The station is scheduled to go online in 2020.
