BYD Seagull production tops 1 million units

BYD announced that its entry-level hatchback has hit 1 million units produced at today’s media event. The Seagull launched two years and two months ago in April 2023.

Seagull is BYD’s cheapest car, priced between 63,800 – 82,800 yuan (8,900 – 11,500 USD). In May, it was the second-best-selling car in China, trailing only the Geely Xinguan. BYD announced it sold 60,131 units in May, however, only about half, 31,105, were sold in China, according to insurance registrations monitored by China EV DataTracker. That suggests 29,026 shipped to overseas markets.

Last month, Seagull launched in 15 European countries as Dolphin Surf, starting at 22,990 EUR (26,900 USD). The European version is 210 mm longer, and the base trim has the same battery and slightly stronger e-motor.

In China, the base trim features a 30 kWh LFP battery, providing a 305 km CLTC range. It is powered by a 55 kW motor, the 0-50 km/h acceleration is 4.9 seconds, and the 0-100km/h acceleration is yes.

The price is 63,900 yuan, and the customer can enjoy a 20,000 yuan government trade-in subsidy, in addition to BYD’s trade-in subsidy of 4,000 yuan. BYD also offers financing options with zero down payment and 0% interest.

“1 million users are part of the Seagull story,” says the BYD presentation in Chinese during the media event.

As of 31st May, 992,637 units were sold globally, according to BYD figures, meaning 1 million sales were hit in the first week of June.

In 2025 so far (Jan-May), BYD sold 233,126 units of Seagull, up 50% from the same period last year, according to the company’s official figures. BYD Seagull is the third best-selling model in China in 2025 so far (Jan-May) with 144,204 units, behind Geely and Wuling.

In the Iranian market, the BYD Seagull has already been introduced by private importers and has received considerable attention. Most recently, Tigard Motor showcased the Seagull as a new entrant at the 22nd Shiraz Auto Show. This official presentation and display unit provided a valuable opportunity to gauge customer interest and test market appetite for an affordable urban electric hatchback, with an estimated price range of 1 to 1.5 billion tomans (approx. $17,000–$25,000).

Considering the Seagull’s global sales momentum, leveraging the Shiraz Auto Show was a smart strategic move. If Tigard Motor finalizes its import plans and manages to keep the vehicle’s final price below the 1.5 billion toman threshold, the Seagull—thanks to its compact size, efficient energy use, flexible financing packages, and BYD’s strong brand reputation—has the potential to achieve solid sales in Iran. The Shiraz exhibition served as a meaningful trust-building platform for customers and could mark the beginning of a broader market presence for this model in the country.
