Khodrocar - The ballyhooed Dieselgate scandal is ancient history, it seems. Volkswagen (the brand, not the group) set a production record in 2017 by building over six million cars.
Demand for Volkswagen vehicles ballooned in many global markets. Its best-selling models this year were the Golf, the Jetta, the Santana, the Passat, and the Polo. Some of those nameplates might not sound familiar; the Polo and the Santana aren't U.S.-spec cars but they're both immensely popular abroad.
Notably, the company points out the Santana posted stellar sales figures on the Chinese market. It also saw growing demand for the Tiguan, which comes as a five-seater outside of North America, and the brand-new T-Roc, which we won't see on our shores due to its restrained dimensions.
Volkswagen posted better-than-expected results in America, too. Full-year figures aren't in yet, but the company's sales reached 309,395 units through November, an increase of 8.3 percent compared to the first 11 months of 2016.
While that's a step in the right direction for the Wolfsburg-based brand, it still lags far behind rivals Toyota, Honda, and Kia. Officials hope an SUV offensive will keep the momentum going.
The amount of logistics required to build six million cars in 12 months is jaw-dropping. Volkswagen runs a network of 50 plants scattered across 14 countries that build more than 60 different nameplates.
The Volkswagen brand's strong performance could help the Volkswagen Group beat Toyota once again and become 2017's biggest car-maker. Stay tuned next week for the final results.
