Volkswagen ID. Unyx 09 hardware architectures have been officially exposed through the latest Ministry of Industry and Information Technology regulatory catalogue. This mid- to large-size fastback vehicle is scheduled for an official commercial rollout in the second half of 2026.

The Volkswagen ID. Unyx 09 represents the second vehicle co-developed under the Volkswagen-Xpeng strategic partnership. This mid- to large-size fastback vehicle is scheduled for an official commercial rollout in the second half of 2026.

Built as a performance-oriented wide-body coupe, the vehicle leverages its substantial footprint to target premium electric passenger-car segments. The chassis blueprint measures 5,081 mm in length, 1,980 mm in width, and 1,509 mm or 1,526 mm in height, depending on the specific trim configuration. Engineers have specified a long wheelbase of 3,030 mm, maximising the under-floor footprint for battery cell integration.

Powertrain and battery

The high-voltage propulsion architecture offers consumers a choice between single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive setups. The single-motor variant integrates a rear permanent-magnet synchronous motor delivering a peak output of 230 kW (308 hp) and a continuous-rated output of 110 kW. For the high-performance all-wheel-drive tier, a front motor with a peak output of 140 kW (188 hp) and a 50 kW rated baseline complements the rear unit, bringing the total peak capacity to 370 kW (496 hp).

To support this high power draw, Volkswagen utilises lithium iron phosphate cell chemistry supplied directly by Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited. The individual cells are assembled into complete battery packs by Volkswagen Anhui Components Co., Ltd., ensuring tight vertical integration within the local manufacturing ecosystem. This specialised hardware setup allows the dual-motor performance tier to achieve a maximum regulated speed of 200 km/h despite a substantial curb weight of 2,307 kg.

Architecture and hardware

The exterior silhouette adopts a highly sculpted aesthetic, with aggressive front fascias, pronounced wide-body rear arches, and premium 21-inch sport alloy wheels. These large-scale wheels pair with Brembo brake callipers to manage the 2,207 kg single-motor variant, which offers an optional panoramic glass canopy. Both configurations feature factory-optional integrated Electronic Toll Collection transponders and clear a gross vehicle weight rating of up to 2,760 kg.

Advanced optical systems headline the exterior technical array, incorporating digital light processing high-definition matrix projection headlights. This setup works alongside crystal laser-engraved interactive light-emitting diode clusters to intelligently project adaptive lane carpets and vehicle width indicators onto the road surface. These active safety projection systems are designed to substantially reduce navigational hazards during low-visibility nighttime driving.

Brand portfolio strategy

The introduction of this fastback flagship follows the previous rollout of the Volkswagen ID. Unyx 07 crossover, which established the sub-brand’s initial retail presence with a segment baseline of 110,204 yuan (16,200 USD). Volkswagen subsequently expanded this localised product offensive by introducing the Volkswagen ID. Unyx 08 SUV, cementing its co-development collaboration with Xpeng from a target of 226,530 yuan (33,300 USD). While joint ventures have historically prioritised conventional layouts, this new flagship signals a direct pivot toward high-performance passenger-car segments.
